Moving right along.
In light of John Galliano's recent troubles, the Christian Dior show was a toned-down presentation, less dramatic than one would normally expect. This time, the theatricality that characterized Galliano's shows was banned, and the proceedings were much more focused on the clothes. Luxurious and colorful, the collection nonetheless has a somber tone to it, no doubt due to the man behind the clothes than the clothes themselves. We do love this collection, though; the velvets, the rich blues and reds, the gorgeous coats and frilly gowns . What a shame that it's been tainted.But fashion marches on and sometimes, it even marches in the right direction. Dior's President & CEO Sidney Toledano read a statement before the show, which included the following:
"Since its founding by Monsieur Dior, the House of Christian Dior has lived an extraordinary and wonderful story and has had the honor of embodying France’s image, and its values, all around the world. What has happened over the last week has been a terrible and wrenching ordeal for us all. It has been deeply painful to see the Dior name associated with the disgraceful statements attributed to its designer, however brilliant he may be. [...] The heart of the House of Dior, which beats unseen, is made up of its teams and studios, of its seamstresses and craftsmen, who work hard day after day, never counting the hours, and carrying on the values and the vision of Monsieur Dior. What you are going to see now is the result of the extraordinary, creative, and marvelous efforts of these loyal, hardworking people."
The Dior team took the final bow. One man's ugly personal demons couldn't erase the beautiful work they did.
