Lyricist David will be feted June 16 at the SHOF induction and awards dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York. He is being recognized by the SHOF for his 10 years of service as its chairman/CEO; during that time, org's Songwriters Hall of Fame Gallery was installed at the Grammy Museum in L.A.
A SHOF inductee in 1972, David was also the 1996 recipient of the org's Johnny Mercer Award for outstanding career achievement. His "What the World Needs Now," authored with Burt Bacharach, scored the Towering Song Award in 2004.
This year's Towering Song trophy, presented to an iconic composition, will go to Ervin Drake's "It Was a Very Good Year." First recorded by the Kingston Trio's Bob Shane in 1961, tune broke through as a standard after Frank Sinatra cut it in 1965.
The NMPA, music publishers' trade org, will salute hit-making cleffer Marx at its June 15 annual meeting, also to be held at the Marriott Marquis.
Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide since releasing his debut single "Don' Mean Nothing" in 1987. His first seven singles all reached the national top five.
He has also written and produced hits for acts as diverse as Barbra Streisand, Keith Urban, Luther Vandross, Paulina Rubio, Natalie Cole, Daughtry and *NSYNC.
Marx joins previous Icon recipients Diane Warren, Kara DioGuardi, Amy Lee, Neil Sedaka and Jimmy Webb.
